Able child policy

Somerton Middle School aims to provide appropriate learning opportunities for all pupils in an atmosphere in which all pupils can realise their potential. Within this context we recognise that some very able pupils will have educational needs above and beyond the mainstream curriculum opportunities offered by the school. Those pupils who have been identified as being more able should have the opportunity to develop their specific skills and talents.

Anti-bullying policy

Statement of Intent
The aims and objectives of this policy are to -

  • Challenge bullying throughout Somerton Middle School.
  • Sustain a caring and secure school environment which eradicates wherever possible instances in which bullying occurs in any form.
  • Provide support should an incident of bullying occur.
  • Ensure that all pupils and staff are aware of this policy and their role in implementing it.

N.B. Whilst the school can take no responsibility for incidents offsite it will assist where possible in helping to investigate them.

Collective worship

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Our school values all the people who work within it. Our aims statement talks of enabling our pupils to reach for the highest level of personal achievement. If we are to achieve this aim, then all adults within our school have a contribution to make to school improvement, through CPD. This policy provides the framework through which all staff are supported and professionally developed.

School journeys and educational visits

Lettings

The school, as a ''school of the community'' will consider all applications to hire the premises or playing fields on an individual basis. The premises and playing fields may be hired on evenings, weekends and during school holidays.

Lettings will be subject to availability and the approval of the Headteacher and Governing Body. Preference will be given to members of the local community.

Marking and assessment

This policy acts as a guide to marking and assessment so that pupils' learning and the results of their learning are recognised, work is recognised, progress is monitored and there is accurate feedback for pupils and parents which will help in target setting. The school has identified and adopted Assessment for Learning as a key element in school improvement.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship Policy

Personal, social and health education (PSHE) and citizenship enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In so doing we help develop their sense of self worth. We teach them how society is organised and governed. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through the school council. We teach them about rights and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse multicultural society.

This school is committed to giving all our pupils every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards. Within this ethos of achievement, we do not tolerate bullying and harassment of any kind.
